I am...a Korean, Woman, and Fiber Artist, originally from South Korea, and currently based in New York City.
I develop my artistic curiosity through the intricate world of embroidery, weaving, felting, painting, and sculpture. For this combination, I build a prism, an imaginative setting, where the mundane transforms into the extraordinary, and spontaneity is the starting point for my playground.
My artistic process is a departure from the predictability of everyday routines, embracing spontaneity rather than the confines of order and rules. The creative journey transcends the need for tangible results or a sense of achievement; instead, it is a source of pleasure and vitality in its own right. I break free from the constraints of the status quo, viewing myself through a fresh perspective and embracing novelty at every turn. I create objects that encapsulate the freedom I feel in nature and capture those scenes in fabric to give people joyness and elevate their moods.
My desire to engage with materials on a tactile level stems from my secret recipe for materials and the intimate connection between myself and my medium. In tandem with the intrinsic characteristics of soft and flexible fibers,my artistic exploration extends beyond conventional boundaries to encompass the vast possibilities encapsulated within hard fiber materials. The inclusion of hard fibers introduces a contrasting element that challenges the traditional notions associated with fiber art. This expansion marks a deliberate departure from the familiar terrain of “softness” and introduces a multidimensional and dynamic range of textures. Exploring the rigidity and durability of these fibers opens up a new realm of sculptural possibilities, allowing me to push the limits of form and structure. The result of mixing thread and starch is similar to the texture of stone. However, permeability and flexibility can be determined depending on density.
